Living between cultures

Literature-based overview

Living in another country can bring new social expectations, relationships and questions of belonging. This reading theme considers cultural identity, migration and the social circumstances surrounding psychological experience.

The emphasis is on individual experience: what familiar expectations mean to a person, and how they understand their place in different communities.

Understanding your context

Culture can shape expectations around family, relationships and personal needs. A cultural label alone says little about how an individual experiences those expectations.

Questions about what feels familiar, which expectations matter and how a person understands their relationships can offer a starting point. The meanings come from the person’s own account.

The social environment matters

Defne’s Master’s research at Leiden University examined ethnic discrimination and suicidal ideation among university students in the Netherlands. It explored how experiences of discrimination related to participants’ feelings about themselves, the world and their sense of belonging.

This provides a connection with the practice’s interest in social context. Experiences of migration and discrimination can be relevant to a person’s story, while their meaning varies from one individual to another.

Making room for individual experience

A culturally attentive therapeutic conversation considers external circumstances alongside the patterns and relationships that have shaped a person over time. The aim is to understand a particular experience without imposing a cultural explanation on it.

Values, relationships, history and present circumstances all have a place in that conversation.
